China's Speed-First AI Safety Regime Analyzed Against US Debate

The analysis examines China's stated AI safety positions alongside its actual regulatory and lab behavior, arguing Beijing prioritizes rapid development and tightly regulates AI applications and outputs while leaving frontier-model risk largely unregulated. It draws implications for US labs, investors, and policymakers.

“We think China's real approach to AI safety is speed-based, not safety-based.”— Mark Chen

Andrew Ng Says Agents Will Drive Surge in Compute Demand

Andrew Ng argues that agentic workflows, not just humans, will sharply increase demand for compute, storage, and networking, requiring many more data centers. He notes tool calls such as web search are becoming a bottleneck alongside token throughput.

Nvidia Alumnus Explains Shift From Copper to Optical Interconnects

Nvidia Alumnus Explains Shift From Copper to Optical Interconnects▶

In an interview shared by Molly O'Shea, former Nvidia engineer Yannick De Koninck says AI models outgrow single GPUs and copper is running out of bandwidth, pushing data centers toward optical interconnects. He now works at Thema, which is building photonics manufacturing in Europe.

Original post · 1 min read
“Copper is running out of steam.”

Yannick De Koninck, who helped develop silicon photonics at Nvidia, explains why AI models & agents are pushing data centers from copper to light:

“The models have gotten so large that they no longer fit on a single GPU. So what we need to do is interconnect multiple GPUs together to run these models.”

“As these GPUs get faster, they need more data, they need more data at a faster rate, and copper is running out of steam.”

“That's why we're transitioning to optical interconnects, which bring much higher data transfer bandwidths.”
Molly O’Shea @MollySOShea
NEW: Why This NVIDIA Engineer Left to Build @ThemaFoundry

Thema is building photonics manufacturing capacity in Europe

“If you look at an AI factory today, 50% of that is GPUs, but the other 50% is the technology to interconnect these GPUs.”

I sat down with Thema's CEO Herwig Van Hove & CTO Yannick De Koninck in Monaco to go deep on the photonics supply chain powering the next generation of AI infrastructure.

Yannick spent 5 years at NVIDIA, where he helped build its silicon photonics technology from scratch to product-ready maturity. He left what he calls the “golden palace” to join Thema…

Noah Kagan Shares Prompt Scoring X Posts Against Platform Ranking Weights

Noah Kagan shares a prompt that scores X posts using what he says are the platform's open-source ranking weights, claiming copied links count 40 times more than likes. He says it raised a Marc Lou post from 6/10 to 9.5/10 and drew 27K views.

a16z Argues Flexible Data Centers Could Bypass Texas Grid Queue

a16z's Ryan McEntush argues that data centers agreeing to curtail power during peak hours can connect to congested grids sooner. He cites Texas's queue growing to 474 GW, about 90% of it data centers, and estimates 100 GW of flexible capacity could be added without new plants.

Original post · 1 min read
Left: Texas's grid only maxes out about 200 hours a year, roughly 2% of the time.

Right: New data centers that agree to cut back during peak hours can skip the wait for more capacity. US grids could add 100 GW of them without building a single new plant.

Why Texas Is Making Data Centers Wait — At the end of 2024, Texas’ grid operator had 63 GW of large new customers in its queue. By this June, that figure reached 474 GW, more than five times record peak demand, about 90% of it data centers.

Japanese Schoolboy's Butterfly Research Suggests Memories Pass Across Generations

Japanese Schoolboy's Butterfly Research Suggests Memories Pass Across Generations

Carolyn Rockey recounts how Jo Nagai, as a second grader, worked with Georgetown entomologist Martha Weiss to show that trained swallowtail butterflies retained an aversion through metamorphosis and that their untrained offspring inherited it.

Original post · 1 min read
Jo Nagai was raising swallowtail butterflies at his home in Kobe, Japan, when he noticed something odd. The ones he had looked after as caterpillars seemed to recognize him. Wild butterflies fled. His didn't.
He was in second grade. He wrote a four-page letter to Dr. Martha Weiss, an entomologist at Georgetown University who had studied whether moths could retain memories through metamorphosis. He asked if she could help him design a version of her experiment for butterflies.
She said yes.
Using a muscle therapy device, Jo trained caterpillars to associate the scent of lavender with a mild vibration. When the caterpillars became butterflies, 70 per cent of them still avoided the lavender. Their brains had been completely rebuilt during metamorphosis. The memory survived anyway.
Then he bred them.
The offspring, which had never been trained, also avoided lavender. So did their grandchildren. Without ever experiencing the vibration, two generations of butterflies inherited an aversion to a scent their grandmother had been taught to fear.
Jo documented it all in a 33-page research paper and presented his findings at the International Congress of Entomology in Kobe in 2024. He was 10.
A second grader wrote a letter to a Georgetown professor, and together they found evidence that butterflies can pass memories down through generations.

This week, @christopherrufo tackle the Indian Question.

Among other things, this episode cuts to the heart of longstanding foundational political disputes that are simply unreconcilable, but which can longer be brushed aside. Namely that some people (perhaps most people) prefer to live in a homogenous society, and as America tips toward a majority-minority country, that fundamental preference is under threat.

For a long time, liberals, who have more cosmopolitan preferences, have been able to pathologize the desire for homogeneity and subdue any explicit political effort to maintain a white …

Levelsio Reports Bots Crawl New X Links Within Seconds of Posting

Levelsio says a test URL posted as a deeply buried reply drew thousands of crawlers within eight seconds, including a military intelligence firm and a social media monitoring company. He concludes that automated systems monitor X for new links.

Original post · 1 min read
I discovered that 1000s of bots are actively monitoring X for new links posted, probably not just on my account

I noticed when everytime I'd share one of my sites new features or pages, the page would get a bit slower just after posting, then I asked Claude to analyze it

I tweeted a test URL as a reply somewhere deeply hidden in a thread (so not even a main post)

And within 8 seconds there's thousands of crawlers opening the page!

One is a military intelligence firm, that scans social media for breaking news and sells alerts to newsrooms, banks, companies and government, it specifically follows accounts with many followers

Another one is a social media monitoring company that tracks what people say online

I knew of course high frequency trading firms use online news to trade fast on things, but interesting to see it in real life

Twitterbot (X) of course is first, within 0 seconds of sharing, it opens it (probably when I wrote the tweet)

The first non-X bot arrives just 8.40s later, which I think is pretty fast considering it's a reply by me deeply hidden in a thread somewhere

TL;DR they're watching you!
